Distinguished and Famous people from Portarlington

🏭 Thomas Henry Widdicombe

Thomas Henry Widdicombe became manager of Portarlington’s mill after its sale in 1865 and later bought it. He also developed brickmaking alongside the milling business; bricks carrying his name survive in local buildings. The enterprise faced a difficult market as wheat production shifted away from the Bellarine-Geelong district, and milling ended in 1874. Widdicombe later repurchased the building in 1901. His story gives a familiar heritage landmark a working history of investment, changing trade and adaptation. Flour and bricks were practical products, but the surviving mill and stamped bricks now preserve the name of the businessman behind them.
