History of Portarlington, Victoria, Australia

Portarlington is a coastal town located on the Bellarine Peninsula in Victoria, Australia. The area was home to the Aboriginal Wathaurong people for thousands of years before European settlement.

European Settlement

The town was named after Sir Henry Bennet, Earl of Arlington, who was a prominent English politician in the 17th century. The first European settler in the area was a Scottish shepherd named Duncan McRae, who arrived in 1837. McRae was attracted to the area because of the fertile soil and good grazing land. Other early European settlers included William Smith and William Purnell.

Growth of the Town

During the 1850s, Portarlington became an important shipping port for the surrounding region. Local farmers would bring their produce to the town to be transported to Melbourne and other places. The town grew rapidly during this time, and many businesses were established, including hotels, stores, and a newspaper.

The Railway

In 1879, the railway line was extended to Portarlington. This made it easier for goods and people to travel to and from the town. The railway also brought many tourists to the area, who came to enjoy the beaches and fresh sea air.

Portarlington Pier
